EXPLANATION AND ANALYSIS OF MEDIA USE
After
logging my media use over the past ten days, it is obvious that the media
outlets I predominately use have changed considerably since I moved to Duchesne
College from home in Mackay. What lies
behind my media use behaviour is definitely the environment I am living in, at
home certain media outlets were much more accessible, and I would therefore use
them to stay connected to the news. At
college this accessibility with certain media outlets changed, which made other
media outlets more convenient to use.
OVERALL PERCENTAGE OF MEDIA USE
My
media diary shows that I spend a considerable amount of time on my iPhone, that graph illustrates exactly this. I use my iPhone as my main source to find out
what is going on in the world; I am constantly ‘googling’ whatever I think of and feel like I need to know
instantly. I use my phone to connect and
communicate with my family and friends at home.
I use different iPhone APPS to read newspapers and magazines. At home this would not happen, as we had a
subscription to several different newspapers that I would regularly read. Since I have moved to Duchesne College,
although there are still newspapers here I find it much more convenient to use
my iPhone to read the news online.
If
I was to log my media use three months ago there would be much more time spent
watching television. When I was at home I
used television as one of my media outlets, I would watch morning and evening
news programs. Those news programs kept
me updated on what was going on worldwide.
At college we do have access to a television, and I try to make myself
watch the news in the morning but I find that I spend more time in my room
watching television on my computer. My
media use diary shows that I spend a lot of time downloading movies and
television episodes off the internet.
This behaviour is influenced by the environment I am living in, it is
always more convenient to download television on the internet then to watch it
in the common room at college.
This graph shows exactly how little time I spend watching television.

In
comparison to my peers that do JOUR1111 my behaviour in regards to the media
outlets I use is quite different. A
large percentage of people listen to the radio, I very rarely listen to the
radio in Brisbane as I am never travelling by car, and I just do not think of
listening to podcasts on my computer. Compared
to my peers I also spend a lot less time watching television, at college I am
never near a television, it is much more inconvenient here to watch
television. This media diary has made me
realise how little I watch the news on the television, I know that in order to
succeed at this course this is something that needs to change.
